Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/20/2010

Number: 3000

Large populations have been roosting on our trees each night this week.

We first noticed the monarchs on Monday, September 20th and were greeted by them each night throughout the week (9/24). The tree that they were roosting in was located ~25 feet from a garden that has approximately 200-250 square feet of wildflowers planted around the edge. I am bad at estimating the numbers, as it was so overwhelming to see that many. The branches on the tree were covered and made it appear as if the leaves were all turning brown.

Editor's Note: This observer did not specify the number of monarchs present. The roost appears to have been large and -- since the observer said "overwhelming"--we are are estimating 3,000 monarchs (as "several thousand") and marking this record as an estimate for future use.
