Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/25/2010

Number: 1

Yes. But today, they were all Anna's; both males and females. I was gone for a few days to Oregon (Hood River and McMinnville), where I saw no hummingbirds at all. When I returned home, the rufous appeared to have departed but the garden was swarming with Anna's. I had filled the feeders before I left but they were almost dry by the time I got back. (I refilled them twice today.)

The rufous may or may not all have flown south. Last year and the year before they also seemed to be gone for the season but then several came back (migrants from the north?). Last fall, a juvenal male stayed until the middle of December. I'm hoping one -- or more -- may again decide to stay. I'll keep the feeders filled. It looks like the Anna's are settling in for the winter, and I want to make sure they're well fed. (There goes my cold weather trip to southern California. Oh, well. The birds are more important than my frivolous pleasures.)
