Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/25/2010

Number: 1

We drove West to East from McPherson area to Hillsboro on HWY 56, mid afternoon on Sat. A very heavy thunderstorm had dumped almost and inch of rain. The Monarchs were everywhere passing across the HWY. It was a challenge not to hit them with the car. Many of them were stopping and resting on the ground at the side of the road. Far too many to even count.
Later i was at Tabor college football stadium in Hillsboro and counted for 10 min. across an area about the width of a football field. I counted 36 just passing that small area. They were all around me and many did not get counted. That evening i found many in a Park further east in Marion. They were gathering under the oak trees for the night. A strong cold front had passed through and temps were in the 60s. My observation time: I was watching for ___ hours and ___ minutes.
