Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/27/2010

Number: 1

The Monarchs seem to be headed pretty straight south. Heading toward Tulsa! Activity started between 9am & 10am. Counted 59 plus 7 Dragonflies. I must be blind because I was up at a little before 7am this morning and I could not spot them. It was too cold for them to be moving. It was only 44degrees. We watched them land in the Birch Tree & also saw them landing in an Elm Tree out back to roost(hundreds). They must be masters of disguise because I went out armed with binoculars, camera, coffee & a stocking cap. I walked around pretty much the whole block craning my neck, switching from my glasses to the binoculars looking up in the trees until my head felt like it was going to fall off. I spotted one, mind you only one about 9am way about 70-75ft up in the Elm tree as the sun hit it. Between 9 & 10 they just started appearing in the sky. After 2 hours of looking up I could not take it anymore & came inside. My observation time: I was watching for _3__ hours and _15__ minutes.

In the morning when they began to fly my husband estimated they were flying at several hundred feet. The sun was hitting just right and you could tell with no problem that they were Monarchs.
As the day went on I would go out on our deck periodically & continued to see Monarchs heading south. Probably saw another 30 to 50 or so. The ones we saw in the afternoon were flying much lower rooftop level & below. We still have a fence row of Morning Glories flowering, but did not see any Monarchs around them yesterday evening or today (9/27).
