Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 09/26/2010

Number: 1

On Sunday afternoon I spent a couple of very enjoyable hours on the Leslie Street Spit. The winds were very light but it was cool with a high thin overcast most of the time. I saw three well worn viceroys, one fresh red admiral, a few sulphurs and dozens of very fresh monarchs feeding almost exclusively on New England asters. I didn't get as far as the 'roosting' tree that we observed the last two weekends so I don't know whether they were there or not. I also found several milkweed caterpillars ranging in size from very small to very large. The main difference from my last visit was that I did not see any monarchs at all entering the spit near the entrance so I guess the big push is over. Weather permitting, I plan to visit the spit several times before mid Oct and I will report here accordingly.
