Saw a monarch flying through the yard, around 11am. Today is very windy, mild, and the sun is out. I have also discovered 4 5th instar caterpillars and one 4th instar caterpillar on my milkweed. The 5th instars are at the very least, 10 days to adult, IF they become chrysalis today, which I doubt as they are munching away like crazy and showing no signs of moving off of the milkweed to find a spot to hang in a "J". I am worried that they may not survive to make the trip given the late date. Not to mention that the milkweed is just about spent in this area. Not sure if I have enough left out there for them to eat. Nature is a cruel beauty. My observation time: I was watching for ___ hours and ___ minutes.
