Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/28/2010

Number: 100

Between 6:30 and 7:15, Sept. 28, we observed an unusual number of monarchs high in the sky. On closer observation, we saw many (100 or more, maybe many more) hanging from leaves and limbs of a large white oak tree just over the western crest of the mountain. They were settling in as the sun faded. I observed them again this morning at 7:15 when many had already resumed their flight. I counted 50 stragglers take off as the sun reached their particular sleeping spot.
