Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/26/2010

Number: 1

As a caterpillar this monarch was one of eleven that was sharing a very small butterfly weed plant in a newly established garden. The plant was covered with aphids and as the caterpillars grew there was not going to be enough food for all of them to survive. The caterpillars were removed from the plant and raised in cages in two elementary classrooms. The students got to see the caterpillars grow, become chrysalis, and emerge as butterflies. This female emerged early Sunday, Sept. 26th which was very chilly and overcast. By late afternoon her wings were dry and I put her out in my flower garden. Three hours later she was still in the same spot so I put her back into my insect container with some cut flowers. The next day she was taken back to school where she was sexed and observed by the class before she was tagged as part of the Monarch Watch program and released at 2:45. p.m. She quickly flew off on her journey to Mexico. My observation time: I was watching for ___ hours and ___ minutes.
