Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/28/2010

Number: 1

Our third grade classroom went out at 11:15, and saw some monarchs. We decided we better stay out and count to see if it was a great day for migration. We saw monarchs flying to the southwest, low over our grounds. We saw a few high up in the sky. We saw a lot of monarchs on the blooming asters and goldenrod, working the flowers. They weren't there tbe day before, or the day after, so we think they were getting some food to continue their journey. We saw 28 monarchs in 20 minutes. Woo-hoo!
We raised one monarch in our classroom. We were surprised to see it come out of its chrysalis during math class on 9/29. We let it go the next morning, after it warmed up a bit, and it headed straight toward Mexico. My observation time: I was watching for _0__ hours and __20_ minutes.
