Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/01/2010

Number: 200000

I work at a limestone rock quarry. We have a creek that runs into the Brazos River. Every year around this time thousands and thousands of orange monarch butterflies come and stay a week or so. It is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. I have been going down to the river under these trees and observing the butterflies every day this week. More and more just keep coming. When I leave work around 5:00 p.m. they are still there and when I return at 7:00 a.m. the next morning they are there (so I assume this is an overnight roost).

We started to see them the end of Sept. Now (October 6th) they are all in the trees near the river like mad. Hundreds of Thousands of them. I went and observed them this morning and more and more come every day. At first you don't even notice them, for they look like leaves on the trees. This is the most amazing thing this country girl has ever seen.
