Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/23/2010

Number: 1100

We have not seen any significant numbers of monarchs moving through Point Pelee since the 23rd of September, when we had a roost of 1,100, even though we have had cold overnight temperatures and gentle winds from the north to help them on their way. So, it's safe to assume that all the monarchs that emerged from chrysalises in Canada in late August have now moved south of us on their way to Mexico.

In 2003, when we had similarly large numbers of monarchs migrating through Point Pelee, the timing of the migration was the mirror image of this year's migration. In 2003, we had very large numbers the first week of September, then not much during the middle two weeks followed by another wave of high numbers at the very tail end of the month (28th) and up to the 5th of October. In this year's migration, it all happened in those middle two weeks of September. Every year is different, keeping us excited in anticipation of how the migration will unfold, and reminding us that we are only human and we can't possibly understand all there is to know about being a monarch.
