Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/01/2010

Number: 500

October 7
My husband was at our pond yesterday, October 7, 2010 and he said it appears we have about half as many Monarchs as we did on the 5th. We feel so blessed to have been chosen as a place of rest and refuge, our garden will be very solemn when they are gone.

It seems there are more butterflys there now than on Friday. We estimate about 500 or so. We have Lantana, Cardinal creeper, Lions tail and a very large Vitex tree in our garden. The pasture area is full of sunflowers, and not too far away we have an alfalfa patch. We are enjoying the Monarchs presence so much, we know they have to leave but wish they could stay!

We have a garden site next to a pond on our farm. Today we went to check our trail cameras and I walked down to our garden...and they were there. Absolutely beautiful!!! They were on our trees, and trumpet vines and on many of our flowers. We estimate at least 500 of them. I don't know if there are more that will arrive, but these are the first sightings this fall. I am very excited, I always hope for their arrival and this year they are exceptional! My observation time: 6:45 p.m. We watched for about 10 minutes.
