I searched The Rogue Valley for Milkweed plants in mid-sept. and found a single monarch caterpillar after 6-7 hours of searching the valley. It was at the south end, near Talent, Oregon. My class in Grants Pass fed it our valley's milkweed leaves and observed as it became a chrysalis and emerged a beautiful monarch. We observed it in the classroom for one day. We set it free in our community garden and watched as it flew quickly to a nearby tree and disappeared from view. My observation time: I was watching for _hours and __ minutes.
We observed it from probably its last instar to chrysalis, for approx. 15 days, and then only overnight and into the next class time as the butterfly.
