The three third grade classes at Davis Thayer Elementary School planted its 50 Red Empire tulip bulbs September 29, 2010 around 10:00 am. It was a sunny, warm morning around 80 degrees. That temperature is about 8 degrees higher than normal for this time of year, which is fall, in New England. The humidity was around 80%. The whole week was rainy except for Wednesday, so we were very lucky to have such a nice day to plant. Some tree’s leaves are beginning to turn colors now, orange yellow and red, especially on the maples trees. The length of daylight for this day is 11:57 minutes.
Moms helped us dig the holes and put bone meal in the hole with the bulbs. We got Popsicle sticks with our names on them that our secretary laminated for us. We put them in the ground next to our bulbs. We covered the bulbs with dirt and chicken wire to protect them from squirrels. Our teachers had our classes draw pictures of our bulbs and we predicted when we thought they would sprout and bloom. Our classes went to the Journey North web site to learn about how other schools are taking part in this project too.
