We still have two females coming to our feeders and possibly a male. They are sipping nectar at an astonishing rate...probably twice as much as during the summer. Today is the first cool day since summer. Around 65 degrees, but a chilly wind. I am going to leave the porch lights on, after reading comments from people saying they have observed their hummers feeding in the dark. I would love for our hummers to winter over here at our home, but I know they will eventually migrate south. I will still leave up our feeders for stragglers. My neighbor, who is a naturalist, told me that it is not impossible that our hummers stay for the winter, and told me how to make sure the nectar doesn't freeze, although we do not get many freezing days in this part of North Carolina. I am very glad that our hummers werent hurt by all the rain we received. We live in Wilmington and were briefly famous this week as the place in the United States that received over 22" of rain in a little over 4 days, breaking all rainfall records, including the previous (now paltry) record of 19" set by Hurricane Floyd in 1999.
