Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/01/2010

Number: 300

October 7
Monarchs are still roosting. About the same amount as first report. Several hundred . They first were roosting on the south side of the pecan trees but now seem to prefer the north side of the trees on the south side of the house. There are so many that it looks like leaves on some of the bottom branches of the pecan trees. Not sure about where they are feeding. We live on a thousand acre farm which is currently planted with cotton which is near harvest. We do have humming bird feeders but I have not noticed the butters feeding on them. Last year they did not seem to stay around as long as they have this year. Maybe its the Indian summer we are having. Last evening Rhesa and I caught a few with Rachel's butter net and when we swooped them off the limb man there were butters everywhere. Did not realize there were so many until they started flying. They seem very durable after handling some of them. It was such a treat to observe them up close and personnel. We do have some pictures and will try and get them to you by this weekend.October 1
