Oct 3 started out cold with only a few monarchs, but the long walk along the rail line started to add a few numbers. The goldenrod sites that were busy with monarchs on Oct 1 only had a few! We ran into Randy who tipped us off on some Baccharis up by the main trestle that did have several very intently nectaring on it. I am glad I brought my extra long butterfly net to reach them!!!
ended up tagging 20 and saw about 24 total, season definitely ending. Our capture success was higher, which was good since there was not as many to swing at! I even caught a monarch in the big net one handed because I was holding a live red-banded Hairstreak that I had just plucked off a leaf bare handed. Any day in the field is a good day.
Nectar use was mostly goldenrod and baccharis, and a couple on bidens.
