Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/16/2010

Number: 30

In a more remote corner of the community college campus, there is a walking path with some native trees and plants to Kansas. About 7:00 pm, about 20 to 30+ Monarch butterflies were swirling around and resting on the two very tall Cottonwood trees that still had light being illuminated on them from the day’s sun. There seemed to be a nucleus of butterflies forming on a lower branch of each tree but mostly the larger of the two. The tops of the tree seemed to be ignored. Once situated, one by one was folding his/her wings taking a still, resting stance. It was a peaceful, lovely sight. I only stayed about 30 minutes, however. Two days later and periodically since then I have visited the same spot and haven’t seen any more on those trees. I didn’t quite know what I was witnessing and thank you for your site immensely. I’ll keep an eye open next year.
