Late afternoon at Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, Oceanville, NJ. We saw hundreds, maybe 1,000 monarchs nectaring on goldenrod and other native plants! As the sunlight began to dwindle, the monarchs starting clumping up on the stems of the plants. We saw dozens of roosts, most had 10-50 monarchs on them! Beautiful afternoon, upper 60s, low 70s, gusty N, NW winds, blowing between 10-20mph.
Editor’s Note: We are estimating 1200 monarchs based on observer’s description of dozens of roosts, most had 10-50 monarchs on them. (24x50)
