Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/10/2010

Number: 24

October 26
We had a cold front come through during the night and the winds were northerly. But, today, they are back to WSW. Temps are cooler. I'll continue to monitor population in my garden. The numbers build each day, and I do see different Monarchs. Night time roosting depends on how many Monarchs are hanging around that day. They have lots of trees for roosting, so with the exception of 6 hanging on one limb one night, they are scattered.

Northerly winds are in the forecast for several days next week. Maybe this will result in more sightings. Seems the Monarchs are sightseeing on their way to Mexico this year.

October 25
Monarchs continue to visit the garden with a dozen or more present everyday since early October. At night, they roost in the trees around the yard and in the neighbor's yards. Today the winds are strong from the south, and the monarchs are being beaten back. Tonight the winds shift again allowing them to continue their journey southward.

October 11
The Monarchs are building in numbers and continuing to nectar today. There are at least 2 dozen out there now. We look like we are in for a weather change. Had rain last night, so only managed to find two monarchs hanging on to the places where I saw them in the evening.

October 10
The Monarchs have been hanging around most of the day. This evening from 1800 to 1830, I observed at least a dozen Monarchs in my backyard roosting on various trees and shrubs. In the morning, I will check and count how many head south. Winds were from the south all day. Tomorrow the winds will be out of the northwest.
