Tues. Oct 5, Chincoteague NWR, Assateague Island, VA:
Monarchs continued to migrate today on WNW winds at 20mph. Those that rode the wind to the beach were blown out over the ocean. Hundreds stayed down low in the seaside goldenrod and spent the day nectaring and clinging to the plants. The high temperature was 61 degrees F, with partly to mostly cloudy skies. I found several monarchs on the ground, alive but inactive. I warmed them with my breath and set them on goldenrod flowers to nectar. The forecast for Wednesday morning at sunrise is full sun, 45 degrees and W wind at 5mph. Hopefully the monarchs will warm up enough to continue migrating before the wind speed increases. We were able to get another 100 seaside goldenrod plants planted this morning, before the winds picked up.
