Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/08/2010

Number: 1

Today in Cobourg, east of Toronto on the north shore of Lake Ontario, we are getting strong westerly winds as well and above normal temperatures of 70 F on this sunny day. Most of last week was cloudy and cool, and that last of my pupae hatched out on Thursday. I found a number of late adult monarchs this afternoon feeding on one of the few remaining flowering plants here - blue New England asters. Usually one can also find a few on a variety of dandelion as well. The orange color on the wings of these individuals is becoming a rusty orange - not the usually shiny/glossy orange of earlier migrants. Tomorrow temperatures drop down to a high of about 54 F, and down into the high 30's at night. Monday is our Canadian Thanksgiving. When will we see the last of the monarchs up here? Not sure. I've seen late individuals in November. One was found here in Ontario one December during a Christmas Bird Count. One tough butterfly!
