Thought you might like to know that this past Saturday, Oct. 9, I was crossing the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway bridge, heading from north to south toward New Orleans/Metairie, and was in the company of dozens of monarch butterflies plus large dragonflies (some were likely common green darners, at least based on one I caught in my car's front grille). I counted 36 monarchs as I traveled the 24-mile bridge, and I'm betting there were many more that I didn't notice. Temperatures were in the high 60s/low 70s and wind was calm (high pressure was dominating the weather).
The sightings made me wonder if the warmth from or visual attraction of this long bridge (a 'ribbon of concrete' across the large lake) were factors in the migratory route. Any thoughts?
