Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/13/2010

Number: 1

Monarchs by the thousands over Amistad Reservoir. Beautiful!!! My observation time: I was watching for 1 hour.

The count yesterday (Oct. 13) was well over 500 per hour. I took a video camera to film some of them for my elderly mother in East Texas who said she would like to see the migration. The Monarchs came through in little groups of 5 to 20 with some being 20-30 feet high and the others much higher taking advantage of the northerly winds to put on some serious mileage. The groups were constant with less than 10 seconds between them. I have not seen any Monarchs this morning. The weather is a little cool and they usually wait for warmer and later in the morning with the air thermals for lift. Every year the Monarchs travel through Del Rio but their route will vary within a 15 mile corridor. We have been lucky to have been in the direct flight line and provided an overnight roost in our shrubs and trees.
