Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/13/2010

Number: 1

Altus and I have been making a driving count across the Lavaca Bay Causeway NE towards Point Comfort and then along both sides of the peninsula over there at the north end. The total trip is 7 miles and takes us 40+ minutes because of the amount of shell road on the peninsula. The migration along the Coastal Flyway started almost a week ago and the numbers are slowly increasing. Today, we did our 7 mi run across the bay at 11:00 am and counted 22 monarchs and then did the run again at 12:30 and counted 21. Light NW wind in the morning but was already stiffening to 15 out of NNW this afternoon, clear, hi of 85, low tomorrow morning near 50. We didn't get to go again later, may try an early run tomorrow. I really think numbers are going to come and go at this for another week depending on the wind and then we may get a surge ... could be fooled!!! Depends on next front. The big surge, all the way from Cape May, NJ, should get here between the 21st and 28th ... we'll see! Tagging has been real good on seaside goldenrod and sunflowers. Our observation time: We were watching for _2__ hours.
