Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/11/2010

Number: 1

On Monday 11 October, during an hour's walk at the Lynde Conservation area just east of Toronto, I observed 17 Monarchs nectaring mostly on New England Asters (most of the Goldenrod has gone to seed). They were all newly minted, in excellent condition. This is not surprising, given the numbers eggs which were being laid in the first two weeks of September. Not much chance they will be successful migrants, but I wonder what the long range effects of a warming climate might mean re. extension of the breeding range and extended time frame for the migration.
