Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/13/2010

Number: 1000

It was 2:10 so I grabbed a timer and clipboard and headed for the front yard! For the next hour we had 272 monarchs pass between about 150' expanse looking NE. None to light breeze from NE, mostly still. All traveling about 25' agl among trees 30' tall and widely spaced. 99.7dF. Majority were moving westerly at best on headings between 210 and 225.Between 2:50 and 2:59 we had 87 monarchs! At 3:03 in 1 minute I counted 22 for the busiest moment. Most in one view at one instant: 10.

In the trees due south of my house there were between 800-1000 clustering mainly in one tree, but other scattered singletons.

The monarchs hung out northeast of here (above Interstate 90) for an entire week, nectaring and waiting for that north breeze we finally got on the 12th. These are the fattest monarchs I've ever seen!
