Recent west winds have blown in a goodly number of migratory stragglers. This punctuates a very brisk monarch migration.
There was an odd mix of butterflies and "flying ants" observed a few days back in the skies over Holgate, Long Beach Island. The nutrient-rich flying insects were being heavily fed upon by hundreds of careening gulls. You could see the frantic air action making the late-running monarchs very nervous, as they were stalling or swerving to avoid the often out of control gulls. My observation time: I was watching for __2_ hours and ___ minutes.
