Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/15/2010

Number: 5000

At least 5000 above an densely treed acequia (small open canal) just north of San Felipe Creek for about 50 yards, but could have run deeper into riparian area. Just couldn't see. Many small clusters and 100s at a time drifting casually (elating) amongst the trees. 88dF. Very still w. some wind developing at 6:30. Dusk just after 7. This many monarchs looks like the Reserve in Mexico! This picture tries to capture the dense activity here on Calderon Lane in Del Rio.

"Observed thousands of monarchs in back yards along San Felipe Creek and irrigation ditch. They were clustering all afternoon. BEAUTIFUL!" added Mary Kennedy.
