Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/16/2010

Number: 1

My husband was sitting on the balcony of our 3rd floor condo overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and sand dunes while I was inside and he told me within 5 minutes he saw a loose group of ten monarchs fly by and then another 10 or so individuals fly by. I went outside and have seen 18 in ten minute. Three were circling around each other and another two were also dancing around each other in the air We are just sitting here watching two, then one, then another and another in a minute or so go by at this height just in from the dunes along the Atlantic coast. I guess this is a migration pattern, but it is the first time I have seen this. We were out here at this time yesterday and didn't see this many. Four just went by together and now five. they just keep coming over the course of minutes. Some go to the left or north by us and some to the right or south by us. More are going south past us. I just timed 21 in 4 minutes. A couple landed on a pine tree and sat there flexing their wings. It is 6:15pm and we started watching around 5:30pm. They continue, but you get the idea. I don't know how wide spread this migration is over the rest of the island. We live in Winston-Salem, NC but are now at the beach in Atlantic Beach, NC just off Morehead City. My observation time: I was watching for ___ hours and __45_ minutes.
