Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/16/2010

Number: 1

On our walk along Santa Rosa Sound, in the Gulf Islands National Seashore, my grandson and I spotted and counted 200+ monarchs! They were feeding on the Golden Rod and some large flowering shrubs with white blooms that commonly grow on the beach. We walked down the beach just before sunset from 5:10 until about 6:30. We never spotted a particular roost for the butterflies, but suspect they sleep among the large flowering shrubs and scrub oaks, growing in the dunes. My observation time: I was watching for 1 hour and 20 minutes.
