Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/17/2010

Number: 1

After yesterday's SE wind up to 20 mph, there were far fewer migrating monarchs across Lavaca Bay today. I counted between 9:30 and noon today, did get a max 15 minute count of 41 in the period from 9:50 to 10:05, and best 5 min count of 16 from 9:55 to 10:00, the rest of the time there were at most two or three a minute, sometimes lulls. My count for the two hours was over two hundred monarchs passing my site or along the causeway. A LOW pressure formed in the area and we had rain in the afternoon, possibly more Tues, which should keep numbers down. Next front is expected Thurs or Friday and then we will what increases we have again on Friday. We will go across the Lavaca Bay Causeway each day to do counts to check numbers. Large numbers of monarchs are still coming from Cape May, NJ and Pensacola, FL. My observation time was 2.5 hours.
