Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/18/2010

Number: 1

As I walked the section of the beach between Portofino Island Resort and Range Point along Santa Rosa Sound in the Gulf Islands National Seashore, I saw 300+ Monarchs. Some of the Monarchs were feeding on goldenrod but most were feeding on the large shrubs covered in white blooms. Each bush would have 20+ butterflies. I took some photos, but it seemed that the butterflies closed their wings every time I snapped a picture. I have a few nice shots. I started my walk earlier today. I walked from 3:30 until 5:00. I can't wait to see how many butterflies I encounter on my walk tomorrow. My observation time: I was watching for 1 hour and 30 minutes.
