Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/16/2010

Number: 150

I observed about 150 monarch butterflies roosting high up in the trees within 3 blocks of the ocean in groups of about 30-50. Some were feeding on tiny flowers others were floating about. This occurred on 10/17/10 at about 7:30 am. As of 10/18-19/10 the large groups are gone but I have still seen several floating about and up to about 10 roosting in the tree tops close to the ocean. My observation time: I was watching for 1 hour.

Editor's Note: We are dating this report Oct. 16th, the night that the roost presumably formed. For consistency, we date all roosts sightings for the date the roost first formed.
