Monarch Adult Sighted

The migration window ends on or about the 4th of Oct at this latitude. The 4th is usually the last day, or near the last day, when one can visit patches of heather aster and expect to catch 10-20 monarchs in an hours time. Collecting up to the 8th sometimes yields a few monarchs but often nothing, or one or a few.

I just took a walk in the garden and our park like area behind the building and then walked back into the building. The sidewalk into the building is lined with flowers and we have large pots of blooming A.c. in the park and many other plants in flower in the garden. In all, in a span of no more than 6-7 minutes, I spotted at least 10 monarchs. It has been this way since the 12th of September but often with even more monarchs. Without a doubt this is the latest (16th
Oct) that I have seen this many monarchs in this area. Although it is the case that some monarchs tagged late in the season do make it to Mexico, the chances of making it decline rapidly after the 4th.

We still had a few late larvae as of the middle of last week.
