Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/19/2010

Number: 100

About 100+ monarchs scattered through the trees here on the SE end of the cul de sac at the end of Simpson Dr. in Ella Heights subdivision, Eagle Pass, Tx. Clusters range from 4 to 20 monarchs. You can Google us and see actual street scenes of trees, etc. on Google Earth. Ella Heights is a bluff about 200' above the riverbottom w. the Rio Grande just west and DOWN from our backyards. Crest of the ridge has dense grove of mixed trees breaking the wind from all directions, hill and trees creating a strong wind-shadow far to the northwest when prevailing winds blow from SE, but also a dense buffer for fronts sweeping in from the NW, so we catch monarchs almost every night of the entire migration.

It's overcast, muggy and 71.5dF. Just a whisper of air drifting about.

Found a new cluster site yesterday (10/18) after the tagging, weighing, measuring, and taping for O.e. at C. C. Winn High School yesterday. It was sunny and very breezy, but in driving up to the school on a barren hill east of town, I noticed a stand of short (true) willow trees along a ditch leading to a small pond about 1/4 mi. down the hill to the west in a sink, w. a good gully leading in from the north. After my presentation, I went down there, and sure enough! 100s in the 2 tallest of the trees.
