Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/19/2010

Number: 1

After last week's early peak of 480 per hour, we are in a lull since the wind turned to the SE off the Gulf and slowed all migrations, birds and monarchs ... except maybe for large numbers of turkey vultures migrating over plus a few other raptors still making a show of it here along the midcoast of Texas. The forecast shows a wind chance coming with a front Monday. We then expect a second surge when the wind switches to the N and hopefully NW. There still are a large number of monarchs to come along the Coastal Migration from New Orleans, LA, the Pandhandle of Florida, down from the east coast at Chincoteague NWR, VA. The Cape May Monarch Monitoring Project in NJ just had a fantastic week and it takes at least two weeks for that many monarchs in VA and NJ to work their way around to the Texas coast ... so the end of October could be really big for us! We could have another end of October bonanza of monarchs, we'll see! Our observation time, every day.
