Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/25/2010

Number: 300

In San Antonio, in a woodland walking and dog park in mid afternoon many monarchs clustering and resting in a bottomland area where there are many large and old oaks. They were not feeding but were clustering together and resting then would fly off just to fly to another branch in another tree nearby. 2:30 to 4:30 in the afternoon. Probably several hundred.

Feeding mainly ragweed nearby, but every time I see them, there not feeding but resting. Very hot in the afternoons, 90's S/ SE winds due for a northern tomorrow, Hi upper 70's. Searching for tagged Monarchs but have seen none.

Editor’s Note: We are estimating 300 monarchs based on observer’s estimate of “several hundred.”
