Several butterfly hunters were out today (October 24) at Point Pelee. It got incredibly warm, pushing 70+ F., so butterflies were very active.
The accumulative sightings added up to 17 species, which again is quite remarkable for the late date. I know in the past we have had years when cold, cloud or rain have limited sightings to only a few species in total for the entire season after about October 10 or so. This year will go down in history as the most amazing for not only late butterfly fauna, but also insects in general. So far this fall I think our lowest recorded temperature inside Point Pelee has been about 41 F., and predicted weather here out to November 7 has ALL overnight lows higher that 41 F. If the predictions hold and we also get sunshine, more late records will be established.
