Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/28/2010

Number: 1

We have the feeling the Coastal Flyway along the Texas midcoast is about to "bust open" when the winds calm down in the morning. We had a week of very strong SE winds, then they came back today out of the north at 25 mph with gusts to 35 ... right now N @ 9 mph (8:30pm). Broke records for highs yesterday, Houston 93, will be 45 in the morning with a high of 76 tomorrow with light N wind. We went across the bay three times today and watched as monarchs came to the edge of the bay, felt the wind, and dropped down out of the wind into the shore grasses and brush along the shore ... not wanting to cross Lavaca Bay to the SW ... once counted eleven in ten minutes ... went on all day ... they, and many more, are just waiting to get up and GO TO MEXICO! Saw three actually flying the three miles parallel to the causeway ... six trying cluster on some saltcedars on the peninsula but couldn't get their act together! We watched for 3 hours.
