Mrs. Ference's class planted their tulip bulbs today in the courtyard gardens at school. It was a sunny, crisp 50 degree day and the last few nights have had frost with temperatures ranging from 28*-34*. Everyone weighed their tulip bulbs in class. The heaviest bulb was 48g and the lightest bulb was 23g. We want to see if weight predicts the size of the stem or flower.
Also this year we have tried to use narcissus bulbs planted next to the tulip bulbs to keep animals from eating our tulip plants. Last year we tried using the early anemones, but they didn't come up at the same time as the tulips which is what we wanted. Yet their presense in the garden did appear to deter animals from eating our tulip plants. This year we are hoping the early blooming narcissus will emerge with our tulips. We were told that most animals don't eat narcissus flowers. We'll let you know if it works out better this year.
