Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 11/05/2010

Number: 1

We had our big day when the Coastal Flyway migration opened up on the midcoast of Texas today. We have been waiting for a large number of monarchs to make their way along the Gulf coast and after a week of strong south winds and then strong north winds, it was calm enough today. At the point where we have done our counts for years, they were coming across Lavaca Bay at a rate of 600 to over a 1000 monarchs per hour from 10:00am to 3:00pm. We had errands to run in town and saw monarchs floating by across town. We went back just before sundown and found clusters/roosts were forming up: http://mcmc.homestead.com/nov510.html We were watching 9 hours.
