Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 11/06/2010

Number: 1

We made our first trip across Lavaca Bay at 9:30am and our last at 7:30pm. A good flow of monarchs migrating from the NE started before noon but got better in the middle of the afternoon. By count we had the best flow with a rate of about 300 monarchs an hour between three and four. Many times we were looking at four, five, and six monarchs streaming past us as we counted at the start of the peninsula. Altus has now stalked, sneaked upon, and managed to get fifty-five monarchs in the two days.

Netting off camphor daisy/golden beach daisy is tough when there are so few left and the monarchs want to be down on the marshy side or get up against some cactus.
We were back after dark tonight and found clustering on the west side of the peninsula on the lee side of thorn brush. We saw three pairs coupled late this afternoon.

Was about 40 this morning, 70 this afternoon, clear, light north breeze that calmed and turned to east this afternoon ... another front Wed/Thur.
