Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 11/15/2010

Number: 1

There was a good flow of monarchs moving down the west side of the peninsula at the north end of the Lavaca Bay Causeway from noon to two. At times we had four and five in sight at the same time as they passed by to the southwest, then out over the bay. This is the most at this point since Oct 29, 30, & 31, maybe one hundred an hour for awhile in this narrow strip. It was cloudy with a low overcast, almost foggy, 61 dF, almost calm. It darkened and about two we began to see a light mist on the windshield and things slowed quickly. Altus managed to net thirteen for the afternoon, nineteen for two days, with the three at sundown on dry, tall goldenrod and sunflowers where they were going to spend the night. Yesterday number was about one-third, roosting is by singletons along the peninsula on the lee side.
Our observation time for 4 hours today.
