Tulips PLANTED

Date: 11/20/2010

Number: 1

My grandchildren and I have been waiting for this day to come! Last week we went to a local garden store and bought our tulip bulbs. We knew we were going to plant Red Emperor tulips as part of the test garden. Yet when we got to the store and saw all the varieties, we couldn't resist buying some additional bulbs - Red Riding Hood, Pinocchio, Carnival de Nice and Formosa to name a few. After searching for a site that was just right and met all the criteria for a test garden, we decided to plant in the sunniest, most level part of the yard. We planted 6 Red Emperor tulip bulbs and 6 other varieties. The weather was unseasonably warm here in Huntsville, AL. The sun was bright all day. We found that digging the first 5 inches in our mountain soil was very easy; however, the final two inches in the clay soil was really tough. We're eager to care for our tulips and plan to cover the bed with leaf mulch and hay when the weather turns freezing.
