Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 11/20/2010

Number: 1

I have a butterfly garden with over 30 butterfly weed plants and I have seen many monarchs for the past month. they are mating and hatching from cocoons daily and I have many monarch caterpillars on my butterfly weed. Yesterday I saw 3 monarchs that recently emerged with crumpled wings and hope its not OE. I did not actualy see them emerge but could tell that they had recently emerged. I don't know if there wings were crumpled due to their wings being disturbed while they emerged or if it is OE. Prior to yesterday I have only seen healthy looking monarchs.I have many flowers planted for nectar sources such as penta, lantana, zinnias, butterfly weed, butterfly bush and marigolds. All of my monarchs are outdoors as well as my butterfly plants.I have no indoor plants or butterflies or larvae. I want to know if there is anything I can do to discourage OE in my butterfly garden. Ive seen even more monarchs this year at this time than last year but it may be because I have twice as many butterfly weed due to volunteer milkweeds springing up that I allow and encourage to grow. The weather is warm here mostly and most of my flowers still have blooms.Every time I step into my front or back yard for the past month I see 3 or 4 or more monarchs flying around or resting in a tree. I often see them mating and laying eggs.I have about 10 different areas in my yard with abundant milkweed in full bloom. There are lots of monarch caterpillars on these milkweeds for the past month including today. My observation time: I was watching for __0_ hours and _5__ minutes.
