Grade 4 students determined that a small plot behind the school sign on Westford Rd. met the criteria for planting our Red Emperor tulips. Time is short! We didn't learn about this project until a short while ago. We're lucky that the temperature has been mild and the ground isn't frozen. Ms. Muller placed bags of leaves over the soil to keep it as warm as possible as Fall turns into Winter. Third graders came out to plant on what they called "the last possible day" to do so. It was very chilly! Snow is predicted in a few days, but students found the earth warm to the touch from the sun, and there were many, many earthworms active as we dug down to our 7 inch depth and placed the bulbs. Back went the leaves, this time to put the tulips "to bed" until Spring. When will that be? Fourth graders will be examining spare bulbs and dissecting them. Both classes will be sharing results and experiences with each other. So, now we're trading soil spades for snow shovels.
