Miss Osburn's fifth graders planted their official Journey North Test Garden on Friday, December 10, 2010. The temperature was in the upper 30's with no wind so it was really a pleasant day to plant tulips. We planted Red Emperor tulips in the garden outside the greenhouse lab. Tulips are planted 7 inches deep with the pointed end up. Before we put the Red Emperor tulips in the ground, we put fertilizer in the soil to help them grow. We marked the locations of our bulbs with forks. We wrote our names on the white plastic forks and buried them in the soil by our bulbs. Everybody could also plant experimental tulips any way they wanted. We planted many tulips in our garden. Some people planted their bulbs upside-down or sideways. Some students worked together to plant their bulbs. We had a good time planting our Red Emperor tulips and hope they bloom in the spring.
