Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 01/01/2011

Number: 1

We have had adults in the backyard and flying thru town all of December. It was strange last week (after Dec 25th ... but we've seen it before) to see a couple or three monarchs in one day flying by hard to the southwest as we were driving in town. We've had up to four adults at one time the past two weeks in the backyard, from almost new to very, very faded. Altus checked day before yesterday and we also had eggs to fourth instars on the first curassavica plants in the backyard ... didn't find fifth instars ! Females have been ovipositing all month and now as of yesterday we had two males patrolling the backyard. Now to watch to see how long this population lasts! The temp has gone down to 34 dF here along the bay on the mid coast of Texas. Most of the state has had a hard freeze.
