Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 09/10/2010

Number: 3000

On Sept. 10-13, Monarchs gather in our and neighbor to west's back yards. Many thousands. Sister has photos, can email if desired. If you google maps Mitchell field airport, or our address, you will see that there is only a field between the airport and us. We are approx. 800-1000 meters north. The migration here moves through very busy airspace and that is my primary concern. I'm glad I found you so I could report that fact to someone. These monarchs roost in the maple trees. I and neighbor four properties west both plant milkweed for the monarchs. I also spread seed where it may survive. The migration moves south from here and the first thing they pass through is the airspace with many jets competing to suck them into their intakes! Thank you, further questions, you may email or call. GFW

Editor’s Note: We are estimating a minimum 3000 monarchs based on observer’s estimate of “many thousands.”
